RYAN REYNOLDS

Humble and kind, with smart jokes and a self-deprecating humor that seems to come from his self-proclaimed alter-ego, Deadpool, or it just comes out naturally, like in every bad dad joke sequence.

Ryan Rodney Reynolds was born on October 1, 1976, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the youngest of four children. His father, James Chester Reynolds, was a food wholesaler, and his mother, Tamara Lee “Tammy” Stewart, worked as a retail-store saleswoman. Reynolds is the youngest of four brothers. Two of his three older brothers are policemen. Growing up in Vancouver, Canada, Reynolds describes himself as a “nervous kid.” He says he found comfort in acting and performing, where he was able to put his angst to work. Reynolds stated, “I was extremely sensitive,” he says. “Incredibly perceptive… I was so aware of everything around me.”

Reynolds started out with a few school productions and then quickly broke into television when he was in his teens. He then landed his first role in the Canadian-produced teen soap Hillside, known in the U.S. as Nickelodeon’s Fifteen, which earned him a Young Artist Award nomination. “I started when I was 13 years old. I did a really horrible soap opera called Fifteen for Nickelodeon that stunned college kids and kept it airing for three years. And then the first movie I did was in Sri Lanka when I was 14. I spent three months there. I was there without my parents, working on a movie in a country that was in the midst of a civil war. It was pretty wild.” A few years later, he acted in the TV movie Sabrina the Teenage Witch. After graduating from high school, while balancing his acting career, he enrolled at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver. While searching for acting gigs, Reynolds worked in several odd jobs, even working a late-shift at a local supermarket.

In the late 90’s, he moved to Los Angeles and landed a role as a medical student in the ABC sitcom Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place. Initially, the show was reviled by critics and seemed desperate for any type of rating success., and “If you can get big numbers, that’s great,” he said. But ultimately, the only goal is to be proud of each week’s show. “And I think we are here,” he continued. However, it was renewed for a second season, but with a provision for a makeover by former Roseanne (1988) writer Kevin Abbott.

But Reynolds still longed for a role that would put him center stage, and his role in 2002’s Van Wilder did just that, as he played a super senior college student turned party planner, nicknamed “the frat guy’s Jesus Christ.” Many credit Reynolds’ party boy role as his first major comedic breakthrough, steering his career toward stardom. In the years that followed, Reynolds appeared in a slew of different roles, from romantic comedies to action flicks. [2010, on Van Wilder (2002)] “It made me the party guy. I would walk into a bar and people would start lining up the shots. You could sum up my career at that point as a free shot at a bar. I know it affected me more than I’m revealing because I know that I went years without even saying the words “Van Wilder”. Even now, when I say it, it’s a bit of a big moment for me. ”

He then played a vampire hunter in 2004’s Blade: Trinity, and a year later, he appeared in the 1979 remake of The Amityville Horror. In 2009, after marrying actress Scarlett Johansson, Reynolds’ career soared as he was cast as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He quickly switched gears when he acted in the romantic comedy The Proposal and, a few months later, he starred in an independent drama called Buried, in which he played an American who gets buried alive in Iraq. But for Reynolds, 2010 was a watershed moment. He was cast in the superhero movie The Green Lantern. “I screen-tested twice for it,” he says. “I fought for the role. And I’m glad I did, because I felt like I earned it. I’m always terrified at the beginning. Then I start working and getting past my fear, which is the real win for me. Just like Hal [Jordan in Green Lantern (2011)], I’m used to stepping forward in the face of whatever fears I’ve created for myself. The stunts on the ground I can do, but I’ve never been good with heights.”

In that same year, Reynolds was named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” Then he jokes, “The most difficult part is going to be organically working this title into a conversation with random strangers.” About a month later, Reynolds and Johansson announced their split, putting the newly titled “Sexiest Man Alive” back on the market. But Ryan Reynolds didn’t stay single for too long. It was rumored that he and Green Lantern co-star Blake Lively were a couple, and in 2012, they tied the knot and welcomed their first child together, daughter James Reynolds, in 2015.

“I’M JUST EXCITED ABOUT HAVING A BUDDY,” HE SAYS. “FOR A LOT OF NEW DADS, YOU TEND TO DWELL ON THE MISTAKES YOU DON’T WANT TO MAKE. I’M AT THAT STAGE STILL WHERE I’M FOCUSED PRIMARILY ON BEING OPEN AND UNDERSTANDING AND LEAVING A LOT OF ROOM FOR ERROR,” REYNOLDS ADDED.

He has three daughters with his wife Blake Lively: James Reynolds (born December 16, 2014), Inez Reynolds (born September 28, 2016), and Betty Reynolds (born October 4, 2019).

Putting movies aside, nowadays, Reynolds considers himself more of a father than a mega star. He lives in a quiet neighborhood north of New York City, where he, Blake, and James spend most of their free time. “I have no problem waking up five times in the middle of the night to change diapers,” he says. And as exhausted as you get, I have this stupid grin on my face all the time. And that’s not because I have a nanny or something like that. It’s just us right now, and I love it.” The actor says he wouldn’t have it any other way. He said, “I don’t have to prepare to be wrapped around my daughter’s finger. I have been wrapped around her little finger since the day she popped out into this world.” Ryan Reynolds used to say to Blake, “I would take a bullet for you. I could never love anything as much as I love you. I would say that to my wife. And the second I looked into that baby’s eyes, I knew at that exact moment that if we were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that baby.”

Although Ryan Reynolds is more than an onscreen superhero and is an all-around character, rumor has it that there will be a Deadpool 3. The film is rumored to involve another popular group in the X-Men mythos, X-Force. There has also been a rumor that Ryan Reynolds will star in two movies: If and Imaginary Friends, both of which are coming out on November 17, 2023. The comedy/fantasy film, Imaginary Friends, is about a man with the ability to talk to other people’s imaginary friends, who discovers that some of them they are harboring resentment and anger after being forgotten and left without any friendship or love. And the family film, If, has a plot that is not ready to be shown to the public. Although, this year, Reynold will be seen in a variety of films, including his role as Ebenezer Scrooge in Spirited, a Christmas takeover film, and Dragon’s Lair (2022), an animated/action/ adventure film. But if you want to see a film with Ryan Reynolds now, check out the Netflix film, The Adam Project (2022), an action/adventure/ comedy film about his character Adam Reed. After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self on a mission to save the future. This shows that Reynolds continues to be humorous and an all-around talented artist and father!
